Bertem

Belgium
1Night
This morning started as a very chilly one, but the diesel heating was keeping us nice and warm. I went in search of eggs, but we had forgotten today was a bank holiday in lots of EU countries, Ascension Day, and pretty much all the shops were closed.
So good old Weetabix it was, and we were soon on our way. We’re making our way to Bruges for a bit of a day visit, but since it’s a bank holiday, we thought we would stop off halfway and get to Bruges tomorrow. Although I have a feeling they also have tomorrow off, why would you go to work on Friday after a bank holiday on Thursday?
We stopped off in a car park that doubles up as the town square, in the small town of Bertem, just east of Brussels. One thing about this kind of travel is that you can end up in places you have never heard of or intended to visit. This sometimes works and can be pleasantly surprising, and sometimes it is just a place to stop in transit to somewhere better. Bertem is somewhere in the middle of that.
The square busy with people coming and going to the local bar, and then the fish and chip shop opened, so we thought we would treat ourselves to fish and chips. I went over while Jo set the table and poured the drinks, but it seems Belgium doesn’t do fish and chips like England, and why would it? I noticed it said chip shop, so I assumed the fish bit. We ended up having a pork brochette and chips. More chips than you could ever eat, but we did.
