Today was Ikea day, although when we left the spot in Bertem this morning, we were heading for the town of Bruges, but the search for a plastic plant for Priscilla goes on. It wasn’t much of a journey along the E40, and we hadn’t gone far before Ikea was scheduled into our itinerary. No big deal, it was on our route, so we could slightly divert, and do the necessary at the Swedish shop, then carry on our way. Only the effects of yesterday’s bank holiday were still with us, and Ikea was full of Belgian shoppers.
We couldn’t find a space to park Priscilla, so we eventually had to abort and move on. And on to another Ikea, which was equally as busy, if not busier, and certainly nowhere to park. We drove through a number of small side streets with 30 kmh limits, creeping along. Bruges was now off the agenda for today, so we were just looking for somewhere to park up. Jo soon found a place in the village of Zevergem, just south of Ghent, at a small fruit pressing place, LeRouge, making juice, so we headed a short distance to it.
It said there was room for two, and when we arrived, no one else was there, so we parked up, popped the required 5 euros in the post box and had lunch. We then spent the afternoon recovering from the Ikea experience.
As we drove in, we had noticed a bar or brasserie on the corner of the junction, and it was about beer o’clock, the place was within walking distance, so we strolled down to investigate.
Brasserie Soda it was called, with a life-size gold cow standing outside. The guy behind the bar was extremely welcoming, and what was going to be only a drink or two, turned out to be us having dinner. We chose a steak for two, West Flemish Red, from a locally farmed cattle breed. Starters and complimentary dishes. All very nice indeed, rather special, and something we hadn’t planned.
As I mentioned previously, sometimes you end up in places you have never heard of, or intended to visit, and this was the pleasantly surprising side of things. A great little find.
