Kasbah Boulaouane
El Jadida
Unnamed Road
1 Night
We decided to move on this morning as the weather was still not up to much, so inland and south we headed.
On route to Marrakech but wasn’t going to make it that far today, so set course for Kasbah Boulaouane, a park up on top of the hill by an old ruin of a fortress or kasbah.
Being just under a half tank of fuel, and sticking to the ‘under half tank and fill up’ rule, we found a fuel station that even took cards, so we saved our cash reserves.
Avoiding motorways to experience the towns more, meant poorer roads. With the constant heavy rain of late, the roads seemed in worse state than ever, and seriously flooded in places. There are some decent size pot holes that put our UK roads to shame. And when covered in floodwaters, not so easy to spot.
That meant a slow, carefull drive but not too many rain showers later, we arrived at the turn off to the track up to the Kasbah. A non-tarmac gravel road, but probably one of the better roads we had driven on today.
Kasbah Boulaouane a fortress/kasbah located just outside the rural town of Boulaouane in the El Jadida Province at the end of a gravel track. Overlooking the Oum Er-Rbia River on a rocky hilltop, with views of the surrounding Doukkala plain.
At the entrance to the Kasbah is the guardian who showed us our parking spot, followed by a little chat that we struggled to understand. Paid him 50 Dirhams for the night and another 100 Dirhams for a tagine for two, our first this trip.
We had a coffee and then went for a wander in the ruins of the Kasbah. Our guardian chap showed us around. We carefully walked around the crumbling ramparts, overlooking the countryside and the very full Oum Er-Rbia River. He showped us the remains of the mosque and even an underground prison.
An excellent stop, that will be one to remember. We are just waiting now for our tagine to arrive.
