1 Night

Rass Oumil

We never saw the Russian sailors again or the vodka.

This morning we pulled up anchor and set course, north for a rough and rugged spot off road.  We had been with people around us long enough, and it was time for some isolation.  Rass Oumill was on our list of off road place to stop the night.

But before that, we ventured south a couple of miles to see the Armas ferry ship wreck.  Assalama ran aground off Tarfaya in 2008 shortly after departing for the Canary Islands and was left stranded near shore. The rusting hull was visible from the beach and became a local landmark, but was dismantled and removed around September 2024, and no one told us so we turned back and headed north, with Jo in the driving seat.

The N1 is a good road with little traffic, but that was all to change when we turned off the N1 and on to the minor roads.  Followed by an even more rough and tumble road when we turned onto the off-road section.  Probably our first off-road encounter with Priscilla and Jo at the helm.

Soft sand, deep ruts and a couple of inclines while navigating the off road tracks.  Garmin had failed us, as had Google maps and even the Gaia maps on my phone were becoming less stable.  I got out and checked the route ahead on foot.

We stopped, then moved again to our final resting spot.  It’s rather strange to stop just off the track.  No markings, no one around, nothing but sand for as far as you can see in all directions.

It’s dark now and I have just popped outside, you cannot see your hand in front of your face it is that dark.  There’s cloud cover, we have had a spot of rain with some moderate wind.
