Rimal Tata Camping
Tata, Tata Province
Souss-Massa
Morocco
2 Nights
We had breakfast and were on the road by 10, which seems to be our usual departure time. We drove through the town and stopped at the Service Afriquia station for fuel. The golden rule is to never let the tank go below 1/2 full as there’s no fuel stations in the remote areas.
We chose a route that took a short cut (in distance not time) across from the main route to the town of Tata as it would likely be more scenic and it was amazing. These mountains are vast and go on forever, dark brown huge expanse of mountain range. Every now and again there were sections of road missing and we would have to crawl along for a while. That and dodging large potholes takes it’s time.
Although it’s remote, you sometimes see large tents or huts in the mountains with people in. We were driving past one of these huts in the distance when Jo saw two young children run over the rocks towards us with beaming smiles. We pulled over and Jo got out with some coloured pencils and colouring in books we had brought along. I watched all this from the driving seat with a tear in my eye, these kids were so chuffed. So we carried on, me with blurred vision, hairpin bends and avoiding potholes.
We had heard of Camping Rimal Tata, a new campsite, from some other van travelers. It’s in a remote area just outside the town of Tata so we thought we would try it out. It’s down a rough and sandy track but a little oasis of a place once we reached it. Zara, the lady who runs it and her mother and another man came out greet us. We were the only ones here so we had the place to ourselves. Zara cooked our evening meal, a lovely tagine, in a beautiful setting as the sun went down over the mountains.
