1 Night
A good night’s sleep at the old railway station was had by all, and we enjoyed a relaxed start to the day.
After breakfast, we hit the road for a short drive to a lay-by at the base of Pen y Fan, the highest point in South Wales, for what we hoped would be a relatively easy walk up. It did start off gently, but as we climbed the wind picked up, making things increasingly difficult — to the point where we thought we might actually get blown over the edge.
There are two summits on this walk: Corn Du and then Pen y Fan, the second-highest and highest peaks in the Brecon Beacons. Both are famous for their incredible views… but not today! You could barely see the person in front of you — or even stand upright, for that matter.
Nonetheless, it was a good trek, and it’s been some time since we’ve done any walking with real elevation.
Back down with Priscilla, we had coffee and a scone while deciding whether to stay where we were or move on, as it was a busy road. Our apps suggested a couple of park-ups in the Rhigos mountains, so we set off the short distance for what we hoped would be a quieter overnight spot.
We made it, and it really is a fantastic spot with a magnificent view over the mountains — at least, until the cloud rolled in and the wind picked up again!
