2 Nights

Charles Fort

After a beautiful sunny evening the nigh time turned out to be a different matter.

We went to bed all good but soon after it started raining. Then the wind got up and the rooflight was whistling to the point we couldn’t get to sleep. Finally at around 2am we decided to move 100 yrds to just in front of the the public toilet block to shelter from the wind. Result, silence …well almost, as soon as we put our heads down there was a slight but annoying tapping from what seemed to come from under the bed.

Everybody up, bed raised and me climbing into the garage to listen, which was difficult when Jo couldn’t stop laughing. By now it was about 2.30am but we located the noise. It seems to be coming from the rear doors, probably the insulation fluttering as the wind went through them. Anyway, can’t do much about that now so back to bed and get some sleep.

A wet and windy morning. I went for a walk on a refreshing breezy beach while Jo got ready. Met a local dog who seemed to be on his own. Scruffy looking short thing. Had a chat with him, went back to the van and had breakfast where he followed me and Jo made him marmite on bread followed by a bowl of milk which he devoured then sat in the grass quiet happy.

Still raining and miserable we set course for the final part of the Wild Atlantic Way and to the town of Kinsale just outside Cork.

On route the WAW route takes you south to the Head of Kinsale and the Lusitania Museum. The Lusitania was a British ocean liner launched by the Cunard Line in 1906. She was the world’s largest passenger ship at that time. Lusitania was sunk on her 202nd trans-Atlantic crossing, on 7 May 1915 by a German U-boat 11 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale killing 1,197 passengers, crew.

A moving story and one less known than the sinking of the Titanic 3 years before. Strange that the start and end of our tour are marked with these two ships sinking.

We left a howling Kinsale Head for Charles Fort just outside the town of Kinsale where we are now parked up for 2 nights and it’s still raining.

Fish and chips tonight from Shirleys, a fish and chip van parked about 100 yrds away. Hake, caught locally and absolutely delicious.

Tomorrow is forecasted to be sunny so will walk into town and see what Kinsale has to offer.
