2 Nights
Rain was forcast for today so we got on the road by 09.30 and set off for the city of Chefchaouen, known as the blue city and blue pearl due to its buildings painted in shades of blue. 130 miles to the north into the Rif mountains the landscape changing to a lush green agricultural one. Some of the roads in poor state but not so many pot holes as subsidence on the nearside, some quite severe so we end up driving down the middle of the road where we could.
We stopped off at the halfway point for lunch at a fuel station in the town of Ouzzane where we bought bread and chocolate. Back on the road again, we saw the usual stork nests, men ploughing the fields and overloaded trucks.
We arrived at Chefchaoeun at around 1.30, under grey skies. The city certainly does not resemble a blue pearl at the moment. Our route to the campsite was a little nailbiting with lots of vehicles, pedestrians and stray dogs. The site is basic, large and busy. Were parked up under the trees with chickens roaming freely.
The Rif mountains are also known to be the centre of cannabis farming.
Tomorrow, if the weather improves, we’ll hopefully see the city in all it’s blue glory.
