Last day at the gorgeous site Camping Meije and the sun was shining on the great mountain side. We had finally cracked the idea of fresh baguette…I went up to the shops in the morning to get them …fresh.
We had breakfast, loaded up and was ready to make our move of the site to our next destination, Bourge d’Oisans. Minor discussion on tactics of exactly how we were to get off this tight spot and Jo outside guiding, I started the engine.
Now this escape manoeuvre meant pulling forward onto the empty pitch in front of us and reversing while swinging round and on to the the road then forward and out.
Forward bit went well but then the reversing bit …went OK for a few feet until i heard a slight wallop and a bloke shouting something in I think was French. I of course stopped and Jo came to the window to tell me I had reversed into the EHU box. It was a wooden structure and I had knocked it clean over.
There was an immediate feeling of shock and embarrassment. We had let the English down in front of a site of Europeans,, mainly French and Dutch. This shock and embarrassment so turned into corrective manoeuvre. That was to put the wood electric box back on it’s feet and all looked good. Well apart from some minor damage to the wood. It turned out later the power didn’t work so maybe pulled a cable out too.
Anyway we exited the pitch area to the reception hut where Nathalie, the camp commander hangs out (6pm to 8pm) with the intention of reporting out incident but there was no sign of her so we made our departure with the intent of emailing her later in a letter of complete confession.
We had not got far down the road and the mobile was ringing …Nathalie!!!
