Perched high above the mountains near Berchtesgaden, Kehlsteinhaus, also called the Eagle’s Nest, is one of those places that feels almost unreal when you finally arrive. The road climbs through thick forest before opening up to huge views across the Bavarian Alps, with peaks stretching in every direction.
Private vehicles aren’t allowed all the way to the top, so we parked Priscilla at Obersalzberg and took the special mountain bus. The drive is incredible, winding along steep roads with dramatic drops and panoramic views around every corner. The bus stops by the entrance to the long tunnel carved into the mountain, before reaching the brass elevator that carries you up into the building itself.
When at the top, you step out onto the terrace, surrounded by amazing views all around you.
Completed in 1938 as a 50th birthday gift for Adolf Hitler from the Nazi Party. Although he visited only 14 times, mostly for short periods. The building survived Allied bombing raids because it was difficult to target. Following the war, it was spared from demolition and now houses a mountain restaurant, open to the public from May to October, offering panoramic views.
This was a great visit, for the views and to stand in places where powerful people from history once stood. It takes us to the furthest point in our Germany tour, and now we will be making our way back, on a slightly more northern route.
