4×4 Off-Road Training

Our reason we came on this trip was for todays off road course. A 650-mile drive to a gravel pit in southern Germany. Used by Mercedes as a test area for the likes of their Unimog.

The weather was glorious, hot and sunny all day. We started at 08.30 with an induction, which was all given in German, so we didn’t understand any of it. Although after the initial frustration with our lack of understanding, our instructor spoke excellent English.

We were split into groups of 5 vans and waited for the instructor. We then went through a series of extreme terrain, steep ascents and descents. Most exercises were carried out twice, so we both had a go. Our instructor was brilliant and gave us instructions in English immediately after the German version. Leaning a high van over at 17 degrees is certainly an uncomfortable feeling, especially when the instructor reminds you that he’s not responsible for what could happen.

It really was a great day, which made us aware of the capabilities of the vehicle well beyond what we would ever normally do or likely to do again.

In the evening, everyone got together at the main reception area for a huge BBQ, pizzas, beer, and live music.

Great Day.
