1 Night

Grillades de pêcheur

We were all settled in last night. The sun had disappeared, and it was pitch black, except for several specks of light out at sea, which were the fishermen in their tiny boats.

Then in the distance we saw the lights of a vehicle approaching. It was a military patrol, and it stopped right outside. They asked for “fiche” and we gave them our passports.  They then spent some time on the radio, and seemed to have an interest in our marital status.

All very nice, spoke some French that we didn’t understand. They gave passports back and left us alone, so we assumed it was ok to stay the night.

The next morning we took a walk down to the shore, where the fishermen set off in what are very small boats to be out all night. Their scooters all parked up in a row in the sand next to a very rusty tractor used to pull the boats out of the sea.

After a coffee and a lounge in the sun, we packed up so as not to outstay our welcome, and made our way across some very rough roads to just outside the seaside town of Tnine Aglou, to visit the troglodyte houses of fishermen.

We parked at a large car park by a fish restaurant next to another UK-registered vehicle, whose occupants turned out to be Australian on a two-year tour.

The caves of the fisherman, set in the cliffside, were rather fascinating. Originally used by fishermen for shelter and storage, many have now been converted into unique, rustic holiday accommodations.   Some looking very rustic indeed.

We have settled in for the night here with a number of other campers overlooking the Atlantic.
