When we checked in with the ladies at the community centre to pay our €15, she said the bar would be open 8-8:30. Things seem to get going later here and it was getting on for 9pm and no one had turned up so we went in for a drink. Just us and Ann, the lady behind the bar who was originally from Woolwich but been here for 42 years.
Gradually the odd local fella turned up until the was about half a dozen locals. We got chatting to a couple of them, one German and another Swiss, both had been here for 30 years.
It was a good night in an unlikely venue and we found out more about the island we had visited and the local community. A very different life. The locals confirmed that only 3 inhabitants live on Dursey island and they could name them.
A few Guinness’s and glasses of wine last night meant for a sluggish start today.
We left the community centre heading over the Slieve Miskish mountains, another superb and scenic drive back to Castletownbere a large fishing port where we will spend the night before moving on tomorrow.
