Westlodge Hotel

We left Castletownbere on a very quiet and overcast Sunday morning with barely a soul about. Next stop was a fuel station in Ballylickey with a launderette to wash the bedding before moving onto the town of Bantry.

Bantry is situated in Bantry Bay at the start of Sheep’s Head peninsula. Our stop for the night was in the grounds of Westlodge Hotel with its own motorhome park up complete with water and waste disposal. For €15 you get to park on a nice flat, hardstanding area in their rather smart hotel where you can even go for a swim and sauna if you’re that way inclined. We weren’t.

Just us and another van here, we parked up after doing the waste disposal bit, had a cuppa and then walked the 1 mile back into Bantry town.

On the way into town we noticed the patrol ship we saw when we did the Dursey island walk, anchored up in the bay here. A bit of research tell us it’s the LÉ George Bernard Shaw, a Beckett-class offshore patrol vessel of the Irish Naval Service. A perusal of the shops and then a walk back through a fairy trail to the van.

Jo cooked an amazing potato and aubergine curry as we hunkered down for the night, just as the weather gods decided it was time we witnessed some proper Irish weather.

Lets hope for a dry one tomorrow as we plan to walk to Sheeps Head at the tip of the peninsula.
