Asilah

We woke to the sound of the call to prayer at about 6.30 but soon went back to sleep. After a busy day yesterday we had good lay in with the usual tea in bed and up for breakfast. It was a drizzly, overcast but warm morning, and the first time we had no heating on first thing for a while.

The beach is just across the road from where we are staying, so we took a walk along the sea front and down to the old Medina part of Asilah. There are lots of cats roaming about and the beach has packs of wild dogs. We got chating to a Moroccan fella who told us the dogs were ok if you treat them well but we kept our distance.
The medina was quiet with few people about but when we got to the town itself the cultural differences began. Men sitting outside cafes, food stalls of all types, veg, meat, live chickens, that just sat there not going anywhere. We went into an undercover market that was almost medieval like. Chickens in wire cages accompanied by pigeons. Old women sitting selling spices and veg. The floor was squelching with god knows what. Jo bought some corriander off one of the old women but working out the price of things is difficult. We had been finding it difficult to get our head round what the coins are but after the corriander and some round flat bread buying, we are starting to getting the hang of it. We left the town and stopped at a small shop to get two 5ltr bottles of water as we will avoid drinking out of any taps.
The afternoon was very warm and sunny so we spent it on the beach and later siting outside the van. All in all a good introduction to Morocco.
